Winter Games in Keeseekoowenin

This January, students took to the chilly outdoors and snow with indigenous Winter Games. Organized by Anishinaabe language and land-based instructor Christine Flett and Grade 5 teacher Sara Stephanson, students competed in games such as floor hockey, an ice bucket relay, snowshoeing, sled racing, and a distance toss. Mrs. Flett, and Mrs. Stephanson were inspired by teachings from the winter session of the Aki as Teacher professional development session, in which land-based focused Elder Norbert Mercredi demonstrated winter games with teachers and educational assistants. Elder Norbert was invited to Keeseekoowenin School to participate in the Winter games for further demonstration. In the lessons to accompany the games, Mrs. Flett offered historical context for the activities, noting that in the past, each First Nations family member had tasks to do in the home; these tasks could require strength and agility, which were supported by physical competitive games.

Christine Flett says the games were well received by students, and they are continuing to plan for more winter games in the coming winter seasons!
