E-Play and Esports at the MSEA

Jackhead student tries Turtle Island Trials

The Manitoba School Esports Association (MSEA) celebrates technological innovation in team sports through Esports, or competitive video game play. MSEA held Scholastic Esports Expo, May 21-22, the event invited schools from across Manitoba to share and compete with their skills in games like Valorant, Smash Bros, and even Dance Dance Revolution. MFNSS was proud to join the fray with a beta sample of Turtle Island Trials*, a Fortnite story developed by MFNSS’ Education Technology facilitator, and MSEA Chair, Karl Hildebrandt, in collaboration with Logics Academy and New Media Manitoba. The event saw 500+ students, including MFNSS teams from Sergeant Tommy Prince School, Lawrence Sinclair Memorial School and Ginew School.

MLA for St. Boniface, Robert Loiselle, speaks to the skills students learn in the Esports setting, noting that competitive gameplay promotes collaborative skills. About the positive impacts of Esports MLA Loiselle said, "they're gaining the skills that will serve them really well when they become adults. So it's by teaching them how to work together, think together and play together, and just be together, that when they're adults, they can work together."
