Mathfest in Ginew

Students take aim in a Mathfest archery activity

This May 27, Ginew School in Roseau River held Mathfest led by Math Lead Amanda Sinclair. Over 50 students were present to take part in the day's fun activities like obstacle courses, archery, and Kahoot math quizzes. Each activity is infused with numeracy, whether it's solving an equation, counting, or touching on subjects like geometry. The events aim to create an encouraging environment to turn the challenges of math into fun. Ms Sinclair reflected on engagement in class since the introduction of Mathfest, noting that in the first year, it was challenging to get students hyped for the event, but they have since come to enjoy Mathfest. Ms Sinclair noted improved student engagement with each other and numeracy, she observed that Mathfest created a sense of community. “I think making it fun and engaging in a game, rather than paper and pen, keeps them engaged, and I have some teachers who have said it's helped their classroom when it comes to the math and keeping them engaged.”
