Cultural Days at Lake Manitoba School

lakeman_rounddance.jpgLake Manitoba School held its annual Cultural Days Festival on May 23 and 24. Opening ceremonies started with a Prayer, Honour song, Pipe Ceremony, and Water Song in the school gym. Principal Rita Sinclair welcomed everyone and urged students to explore the cultural activities on display, such as bannock making, cleaning and preparing sh, square dancing, and jigging. Above all, she said, “Go out and have fun.” e cultural festival is held annu-lly to remind students of their traditions and Ojibwe language so they can be proud of their Anishinaabe culture and history.
In the afternoon of May 23, local fiddler Shawn Mousseau entertained the students with renditions of “Big John McNeil,” “Maple Leaf,” “Red River Jig” and other favourites. The Junior Hawks square dance group from the community came to do their fancy moves, much to the enjoyment of all. On May 24, events were held outside with the visiting drum group Loud Eagle from Peguis. The two days of cultural activities included a traditional feast.

Principal Rita Sinclair said, “It went very well. I appreciated all of the work of organizers and enjoyed hosting the many visitors who came to celebrate with our students. I look forward to an even better celebration next year.”
